Getting in

In Spain the queue is the tour. Buy your way past it.

Almost everything famous here runs on a printed time slot: the basilica, the palaces, the picture galleries. Three kinds of entry, what each costs at the cheap end, and which city you need to be standing in.

Pick a base

Spain is six or seven countries with one passport.

Every tour in Spain →

A Catalan capital that eats at eleven, a Castilian one that never sleeps, an Andalusian trio built by three religions, and an Atlantic archipelago closer to Africa than to Madrid. Six places to start, and the best day out in each.

Off the coast

The Atlantic ones are for whales. The Mediterranean ones are for lunch.

Off Tenerife and La Gomera the pilot whales are resident year round, which is why the boats there sail at eleven and again at three. Off Mallorca and the Costa Brava the point is a cove you cannot drive to, a swim ladder and something grilled on deck.

Before you fly

Four Spanish bookings that will not wait for you.

Most of this country can be sorted over breakfast on the day. These four cannot. They run on capped slots, one-way boardwalks and fixtures nobody consults you about.

  1. 01Alhambra & Nasrid Palaces Tour with TicketsThe Nasrid Palaces admit a fixed number every half hour and your slot is printed on the ticket. Miss it and the ticket is gone.
  2. 02Sagrada Familia Entry Ticket with Audio GuideEntry is timed and the tower lifts are sold as a separate, smaller allocation. Summer mornings go weeks ahead.
  3. 03Caminito del Rey Guided Tour with TransportationThe boardwalk runs one way through the gorge with a daily cap on numbers, and it closes outright in high wind.
  4. 04Tour Bernabéu Entry TicketA stadium tour is cancelled by the fixture list. Match days and the two before them are simply not available.
When the south hits forty

July in Cordoba is not a walking tour. Plan the day around the shade.

Andalusia in high summer runs to 40 degrees by two in the afternoon and stays there. The locals answer it the same way every year: be out early, disappear for four hours, come back at eight. Book the courtyards and the caves for the middle of the day, and put everything on foot before ten.

What you will pay

What a day out costs, from the cheapest walk in Madrid to a private day in Andalusia.

Three price brackets, and what each one actually buys you. A surprising number of the best Spanish days cost less than dinner for two in the same city.

Under $50

Monument entry, old-town walks, a tablao seat and most of the short boat trips.

$50 to $150

Full days: the Caminito with transport, Montserrat, the whale catamarans, a cooking class that ends as lunch.

$150 and up

Private guides, chartered sailing days and the once-a-trip splurges that earn it.

After nine

Spain does its best work after dark.

Dinner starts at ten and nobody thinks that is late. The tablaos run two or three sittings a night, the tapas crawls set off when the heat drops, and half the country is still on the street at one in the morning. Build the evening deliberately and the day looks after itself.
